She saved thousands of lives! Who was Maude Callen (1898 - 1990)?

 


Quick Facts about Maude Callen

She was born on November 8, 1898.

She was raised by her uncle, William J. Gunn, who was a physician.

In 1922, she graduated from Florida A & M University.

She later went to Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) to complete her nursing training.

 She received an honorary doctorate from Clemson University.

She operated a community clinic out of her home.

She married William Dewer Callen in 1921.

She helped thousands of women deliver their babies.

She taught children how to read and write.

She conducted classes on healthcare and nutrition.

She created clinics throughout South Carolina where she served poor and elderly people.

Callen died on January 25, 1990.
