In 1878, Junius George Groves (1859 – 1925) purchased 80 acres of land in Edwardsville, Kansas. His potato business became so successful that people started calling him, “The Potato King of the World”.
He also harvested and sold cherries, corn, and apples. Eventually, Groves owned more than 500 acres of land. He, his wife, Matilda, and his children lived in a 20-room mansion with modern-day amenities like indoor plumbing, electricity, and telephone lines.
Groves started and operated several other businesses including a grocery store. He used his wealth to empower others by providing good-paying jobs and selling land to Blacks in his community. As a generous philanthropist, he gave away some of his crops to a local hospital.
Interesting Fact: It is believed that Groves built one of the first Black-owned golf courses in the United States.
