Renowned African American author, Octavia Butler (1947–2006) was the first science fiction writer to receive the prestigious McArthur Fellowship Genius Grant in 1995. During her lifetime, Butler was also honored with a PEN Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, she received Nebula, Locus, and Hugo awards in recognition of her pioneering novels such as Kindred (1979), Wild Seed (1980), Parable of the Sower (1993), Parable of the Talents (1998), as well as her most famous novella, “Bloodchild” (1984).
Butler’s critically acclaimed literary
works mainly explored dystopian themes that integrated complex, often multiethnic,
characters who dealt with issues such as global warming, women’s rights,
injustice against Blacks, and political, social, and economic disparity.
